He was born in December of 2009. Fast forward five years, and my sister became an avid crocheter. I was inspired by her projects, and got back out the unfinished baby blankie. After a few false starts and some questionable yarn substitutions, it's done! I love it. I think it will look great in the nursery of my third kiddo, due to arrive in November.<br /><br />

The lady that won it wanted it to be for her nephew and his wife who were about to have their first baby. I worked with the mom-to-be and made this quilt to coordinate with their nursery. It took me a lot longer to finish after I went back to work full-time, but I am so happy with the final product.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061004353/" title="Auction Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8456/8061004353_1a652b0bc7.jpg" width="340" height="447" alt="Auction Quilt"></a><br /><br />
A lot of the fabrics are the same as in <a href="http://sdmikke.blogspot.com/2011/07/aidans-elephants.html">this quilt</a> that I showed her as an example when she told me the nursery was going to be orange, green, and brown. I threw in a few new fabrics and left out the multi-colored elephants at her request.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061006580/" title="Auction Quilt Detail by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8173/8061006580_523a994b20.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Auction Quilt Detail"></a><br /><br />
The quilt pattern is inspired by <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/02/little-climber.html">this quilt</a> but I figured out my own dimensions. It was a fun quilt to arrange and sew!<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061006384/" title="Minky Back by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8462/8061006384_967900c65f.jpg" width="340" height="267" alt="Minky Back"></a><br /><br />
The back is chocolate minky and the light quilting makes the drape so nice and the quilt so snuggly. Here you can see the zig zag quilting a little bit. I hope the new mom loves this blankie, too!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-5652267882420678482012-09-03T20:02:00.000-05:002012-10-06T20:02:31.734-05:00Juliet's Throw QuiltI finished Juliet's throw quilt a few months ago but totally forgot to take pictures. I love how it came out! I used all the same fabrics as her <a href="http://sdmikke.blogspot.com/2012/05/meet-juliet.html">crib quilt</a> and it really contributes to her serene bedroom.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061007252/" title="Juliet's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8309/8061007252_2a6871a83e.jpg" width="340" height="429" alt="Juliet's Quilt"></a><br /><br />
The quilt design is inspired by <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2011/11/diamond-lattice-and-more.html">this quilt</a> on Moda Bakeshop, but I couldn't really follow those directions so I just made a patchwork quilt top on the diagonal and chopped it up to add the white sashing.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061007084/" title="Juliet's Blankie by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8179/8061007084_608a42662c.jpg" width="340" height="494" alt="Juliet's Blankie"></a><br /><br />
(The kids really wanted to be in the picture!) To quilt this, I stitched in white thread down the center of all the sashing, and then just inside each box with khaki thread.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061004657/" title="Juliet Hiding by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8453/8061004657_31c74d05b1.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Juliet Hiding"></a><br /><br />
The back is green fleece and it is super snuggly. As the weather here finally starts to cool off I am looking forward to snuggling under it with her!<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/8061006832/" title="Siblings by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8457/8061006832_9458d39fc1.jpg" width="340" height="509" alt="Siblings"></a><br /><br />
We are so blessed that these kids love each other so much. Most of the time they play together so nicely, with only the occasional 35lb vs 20lb mishap. Life with two kids is pretty great!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-50143187504830725062012-06-15T09:38:00.000-05:002012-07-07T09:58:52.359-05:00Baby Kali QuiltSome dear friends just had their second baby girl, and this is the blankie I made for her. The fabric is Riley Blake from my stash, which went perfectly with the nursery - green with ladybugs. My friends are fellow <a href="http://www.rice.edu">Rice</a> alums so the owls were an added bonus.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7520615992/" title="Baby Kali Quilt Detail by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8020/7520615992_1fe1bd9c3b.jpg" width="340" height="321" alt="Baby Kali Quilt Detail"></a><br /><br />
The quilting on this quilt is loops, which was really fun and quick to do. I decided not to use any batting, which caused some tension issues, but overall I think the quilt will hold up well. The quilt pattern was inspired by <a href="http://whipup.net/2011/02/17/guest-blogger-series-quilt-design-ambassador-to-large-scale-prints/">this one</a> with the strips and outlined blocks.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7520616296/" title="Baby Kali Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7256/7520616296_203397b9db.jpg" width="340" height="433" alt="Baby Kali Quilt"></a><br /><br />
Of course I did a little label on the back. It will probably be a while before I give up the convenience of the letter stitching by my machine!<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7520616166/" title="Quilt Detail by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8001/7520616166_908e5f518c.jpg" width="340" height="231" alt="Quilt Detail"></a><br /><br />
I hope baby Charlotte gets a lot of use out of her new blankie.<br /><br />Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-12549488002058937542012-05-02T13:50:00.002-05:002012-05-02T13:50:29.944-05:00Meet JulietSince I haven't been posting anything other than finished projects, I guess it's appropriate to be introducing you to Juliet so late. She is almost five months old now, and such a wonderful part of our little family! Here she is posing with her crib quilt. It will live on the end of her bed (or as a playmat on the floor) until she is old enough to snuggle with it!<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7136333173/" title="JJ's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7206/7136333173_d58d7abd52.jpg" width="340" height="343" alt="JJ's Quilt"></a><br /><br />
Juliet Jeanne was born December 4th. She is much smaller than her big brother was (25th percentile vs his 95+) and it is still a surprise to me that I have a baby girl.<br /><br />

Though we didn't know if she was a boy or girl until she was born, we didn't finish her room until after she arrived, so I was able to include a decent amount of pink in the fabrics. I tried not to go overboard!<br /><br />

She is the new little sister to <a href="http://sdmikke.blogspot.com/2009/04/for-another-charlie.html">Charlie</a>. I made her a little blankie in browns, greys, and oranges. Not traditional girl colors, but I love how it turned out!<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6982353138/" title="Abby's Quilting by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Abby's Quilting" height="227" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8027/6982353138_0c9c55911e.jpg" width="340" /></a><br />
<br />
It is quilted to brown minky with light bamboo batting, with just a free motion meandering pattern. The blocks were originally inspired by the quilt in one of <a href="http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/green-kids-rooms-roundup-141840?image_id=2319364">these rooms</a> on Apartment Therapy, but it ended up only a loose interpretation.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7128437555/" title="A Quilt for Abby by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="A Quilt for Abby" height="476" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7106/7128437555_44e511b2cf.jpg" width="340" /></a><br />
<br />
The fabric is High Society in Safari with my own polka dots thrown in for the block borders.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6982353350/" title="Abby's Label by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Abby's Label" height="227" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7094/6982353350_fca2c76f48.jpg" width="340" /></a><br />
<br />
And of course an in-binding label. I hope little Miss Abbie enjoys her blankie!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-57142887672947863042012-03-30T22:05:00.000-05:002012-04-30T22:06:38.654-05:00Boy Baby Bin!<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7128437251/" title="Gift Basket by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Gift Basket" height="256" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7208/7128437251_d808d2836f.jpg" width="340" /></a><br /><br />
I needed a quick shower gift for a baby boy, and put together this little bin. A rainbow bin with some useful goodies, a little outfit, a super soft horse lovey, and some embellished burp rags.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/7128437425/" title="Burprags by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Burprags" height="228" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7058/7128437425_5c488c7ae2.jpg" width="340" /></a><br /><br />
It was fun picking boy-ish novelty fabrics from my stash!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-42451821568436872062012-03-19T13:11:00.000-05:002012-05-01T13:12:17.930-05:00Quick ProjectMy cousin welcomed a second sweet baby girl (sister to <a href="http://sdmikke.blogspot.com/2009/09/sweetpeas-quilt.html">Avery</a>) and I wanted to send a gift right away! I pulled these fabrics and some white terrycloth from my stash for a set of burprags.<br /><br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6982352370/" title="Terrycloth Burprags by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7279/6982352370_d7399bca8f.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Terrycloth Burprags"></a><br /><br />
I find I can never have enough burprags, so I hope Megan finds them as useful for new baby Brooke!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-84481339538555333812011-12-18T14:06:00.000-06:002011-12-13T14:20:46.996-06:00Rainbows and Peace SignsThis is the third Christmas gift quilt I'd planned for this year, and I am proud to say that I got them all done and in the mail by the first of December. Being due with baby #2 in early December proved to be great motivation!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6506778297/" title="Kendall's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7155/6506778297_0609be9c8e.jpg" width="340" height="496" alt="Kendall's Quilt"></a><br /><br />All three quilts ended up using mostly Riley Blake fabrics. This one is mostly Feeling Groovy, since the recipient loves peace signs and pink. Perfect!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6506778441/" title="Rainbow Binding by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7151/6506778441_54e17f1684.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Rainbow Binding"></a><br /><br />I absolutely love the rainbow binding. Definitely my favorite part of the quilt. The design is inspired by <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/2010/05/26/goldfish-squared-baby-quilts/">this quilt</a> on Ashley's site. I get so much inspiration from her! I do hope all three of these quilts get a lot of use and are well-loved...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-33570773281511369462011-12-15T14:00:00.000-06:002012-05-01T13:18:53.154-05:00Quilting for BoysWhy do I have so much more trouble designing masculine quilts?<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6506777989/" title="Grant's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7165/6506777989_277909911e.jpg" width="340" height="446" alt="Grant's Quilt"></a><br /><br />In the end, I am quite happy with this one. <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6982352172/" title="Maggie's Doll by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7245/6982352172_9c85260590.jpg" width="340" height="509" alt="Maggie's Doll"></a><br /><br />
Maggie is more of a stuffed animal girl right now, but hopefully someday she likes her little dolly!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-4082394883642998392011-12-13T13:51:00.003-06:002011-12-13T14:00:49.277-06:00Tree Skirt<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6506777871/" title="Owl Tree Skirt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7029/6506777871_6e802a7cfe.jpg" width="340" height="255" alt="Owl Tree Skirt"></a><br /><br />Just a quick picture of the tree skirt I sent my sister and her family as an early Christmas present. The main skirt is green wool felt, with Alexander Henry Christmas owls as a border. The lining is a striped home dec fabric, though if I had it to do over again I would choose something that wasn't directional. I started out following <a href="http://www.amybutlerdesign.com/pdfs/Tree_Skirt.pdf">this tutorial</a> from Amy Butler, but since the owl fabric was also directional, I had to improvise. Overall I'm quite pleased with the final product!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-89939594988127298862011-11-14T06:43:00.003-06:002011-11-14T07:50:01.986-06:00Faux Bento QuiltThis quilt is a Christmas present, but I'm pretty sure the recipient has no idea I even have a blog, so hopefully it is safe to share it. I love this quilt!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6344157972/" title="Faux Bento Detail by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6031/6344157972_a8036f7da6.jpg" width="340" height="228" alt="Faux Bento Detail"></a><br /><br />You might recognize the design, I used <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/2009/06/24/quartered-squares-a-modified-bento-box-block-tutorial/">this tutorial</a> from <a href="http://www.filminthefridge.com/">Ashley</a>. The tutorial was perfect, but I'll admit the quilt top took a little longer to come together than I had planned.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6343409579/" title="Faux Bento Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6235/6343409579_6f5e1ce286.jpg" width="340" height="467" alt="Faux Bento Quilt"></a><br /><br />I did meandering quilting, in a variegated green thread, though the quilt top is so busy you can't really tell the thread changes color.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6344157782/" title="So Colorful! by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6092/6344157782_b9d888beb9.jpg" width="340" height="228" alt="So Colorful!"></a><br /><i>Winter makes for tough quilt photos, ugh.</i><br /><br />The back is chocolate fleece, and there is an in-binding label. Still loving doing the label that way. Now I have two more Christmas present quilts basted and ready to quilt; I need to get them done soon in case this baby makes an early arrival!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-40125600036490885922011-09-05T12:13:00.000-05:002011-09-05T12:13:00.108-05:00G&T QuiltSome friends of ours got married... last September! So this quilt is either a very late wedding present or a slightly early anniversary present. In fact, looking back, I posted some progress on this quilt <a href="http://sdmikke.blogspot.com/2010/10/smart-change.html">last October</a> so it's been a long time coming.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6112659587/" title="G&T Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6086/6112659587_7e96c8d767.jpg" width="340" height="474" alt="G&T Quilt"></a>
<br />
<br />Fabric is all Hope Valley by Denise Schmidt, with sashing in Kona Snow. The sashing is only 1" finished, just to set off the blocks. I really love this simple way to highlight a beautiful fabric collection.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6113203932/" title="Up Close by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6194/6113203932_4c2c2959b6.jpg" width="340" height="260" alt="Up Close"></a>
<br />
<br />Quilting is free motion directly to chocolate fleece, since these are fellow Houston folks who need air conditioning blankies, not heavy winter blankies.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6113204120/" title="Binding Label by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6196/6113204120_47d6686b38.jpg" width="340" height="255" alt="Binding Label"></a>
<br />
<br />And of course an in-binding label. This is totally my go-to label right now. It preserves some identification and timing for the quilt without putting a big label anywhere on it. I hope the happy couple gets some good use out of this blankie!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-58625022157240127792011-09-03T10:57:00.001-05:002011-09-04T12:25:43.997-05:00My ChevronsI think in my very sporadic recent blogging, I've neglected to mention that we're expecting baby #2! I'm due in early December, so the clock is starting to tick. We are so excited!
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6109302112/" title="Chevron Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Chevron Quilt" height="340" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6190/6109302112_2ab8309a2f.jpg" width="252" /></a>
<br />
<br />A dear friend of mine is due about two weeks after me, and her first baby shower is this afternoon. I plan to make her a lap size quilt that matches her nursery for snuggling in the glider, but won't have that ready for a while. I took last Monday off to relax and sew, and on a whim, started this little chevron quilt for her. I love the colors, I think they really go with her style. She doesn't know if she's having a boy or girl, but I think this will work for both!
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6109301856/" title="Quilting by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Quilting" height="245" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6189/6109301856_ffdd935eaa.jpg" width="340" /></a>
<br />
<br />The pattern is inspired by <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/08/forties-chevron.html">this post</a> on Allison's blog <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/08/forties-chevron.html">Cluck Cluck Sew</a>. Fabric is some Heather Bailey, some Amy Butler, some Sandi Henderson, etc, all from my stash. I straight-line quilted it for a change, and added some light bamboo batting instead of quilting directly to the minky back.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6108751691/" title="Labeled with Love by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Labeled with Love" height="228" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6208/6108751691_d2c192175d.jpg" width="340" /></a>
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6109301526/" title="Hidden Credi by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img alt="Hidden Credi" height="227" src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6205/6109301526_aeab6a0710.jpg" width="340" /></a>
<br />
<br />Since I just folded the minky around to the front as the binding, I had to come up with a new label plan, so I sewed this little guy in there. You see the hearts most of the time, but if you flip it back, it's got my name and the date.
<br />

<br />
<br /><img src="http://www.themikkelsens.net/sarah/pictures/110903-Rags-sm.jpg" />
<br />
<br />I wanted a little more for her shower gift, so I got this diaper caddy she wanted and filled it with useful changing table goodies and almost a dozen embellished burp rags. I hope she and Baby C love it!!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-49179597059403566792011-08-14T14:15:00.003-05:002011-08-14T14:27:11.780-05:00Katy's QuiltI finally made my sister a proper quilt! I made her one back in 2005 that I won't even link to - it wasn't really pieced or quilted, just big pieces of fabric attached to a fleece backing. I had no idea what I was doing.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6042300333/" title="Katy's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6183/6042300333_bdfb8330f6.jpg" width="340" height="426" alt="Katy's Quilt"></a>
<br />
<br />I was much happier to send her this one! It is almost all Kona solids, with one striped red print in there if you look closely. It is quilted to chocolate brown fleece and the binding is mostly the stripey red fabric except where I embroidered the label.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6042300763/" title="Katy's Label by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6082/6042300763_f8ed563119.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Katy's Label"></a>
<br />
<br />It is free-motion quilted in kind of a boxy pattern you might be able to see in the detail shot. The pattern is inspired by one of the ones shown in my <a href="http://www.amazon.com/City-Quilts-Dramatic-Projects-Inspired/dp/157120847X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313349979&sr=8-1">City Quilts</a> book, though there isn't a pattern for it and I had to make up my own measurements.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6042300501/" title="Boxy Quilting by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6122/6042300501_46e1bf395d.jpg" width="340" height="258" alt="Boxy Quilting"></a>
<br />
<br />It is super snuggly and it goes very well in their modern style ranch house, if I do say so myself!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-91551496597800005302011-08-05T13:56:00.000-05:002011-08-14T14:15:03.247-05:00Patchwork BibsI had a couple baby presents to send recently but wasn't quite up for a full-blown quilting project.
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6042872640/" title="Patchwork Bibs by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6191/6042872640_f6c2b93ae6.jpg" width="340" height="279" alt="Patchwork Bibs"></a>
<br />
<br />Here is what I came up with instead - patchwork bibs!
<br />
<br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/6042872742/" title="Baby Gift by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6081/6042872742_3a7fd791fd.jpg" width="340" height="307" alt="Baby Gift"></a>
<br />
<br />These were so fun to make, and combined with a couple coordinating outfits (these are from BabyGap) and Skwish (best baby toy ever!), I think it makes a pretty nice gift.Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-62588639655214710532011-07-24T14:18:00.004-05:002011-07-24T14:26:01.140-05:00Aidan's ElephantsAdam (recipient of <a href="http://www.themikkelsens.net/sarah/journal/2008/10/okay-ill-share.html">this quilt</a> back in January of 2009) has a little brother! I think Aidan's quilt is one of my best-executed quilts so far. Great accuracy on the blocks, fun quilting, nice drape... I love quilting, and know the folks who receive them don't normally notice execution errors, but it's fun to get better and better with practice!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5971376638/" title="Aidan's Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6030/5971376638_165bd5c8c8.jpg" width="340" height="228" alt="Aidan's Quilt"></a><br /><br />However, having said that about the execution, if you look closely you will notice one slight execution error! I say it gives it character. (There's a note on the photo on Flickr if you can't spot the mistake.)<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5971377398/" title="Aidan's Elephant Quilt by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6121/5971377398_3a34196322.jpg" width="340" height="398" alt="Aidan's Elephant Quilt"></a><br /><br />Backing is chocolate minky, with lightweight bamboo batting.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5971377800/" title="Chocolate Minky by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6029/5971377800_376fdf876b.jpg" width="340" height="245" alt="Chocolate Minky"></a><br /><br />For the record, I finished and gifted this one back in early June...Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-21106445410527019282011-07-23T14:16:00.000-05:002011-07-24T14:24:56.220-05:00Birdie BlankieProof that I am still sewing, just not posting - a little birdie stroller blankie I made back in April.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5970821305/" title="Camille's Stroller Blankie by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6141/5970821305_338661b4d8.jpg" width="340" height="401" alt="Camille's Stroller Blankie"></a><br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5971375902/" title="On Point by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6025/5971375902_cc9f9254ab.jpg" width="340" height="251" alt="On Point"></a>Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-58295901732162619202011-04-04T19:46:00.002-05:002011-04-04T19:52:54.176-05:00Finally!I finally used some of the 9-patch blocks from <a href="http://crazymomquilts.blogspot.com/">AmandaJean</a>'s 9-patch-along back in... May? of 2009? Yikes. That's a downside to having a blog, I can see just how long some projects sit on my shelf in ziplock bags.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5590222643/" title="Finally 9 Patch by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5268/5590222643_241c83eceb.jpg" width="399" height="500" alt="Finally 9 Patch"></a><br /><br />Anyway! I used some of the blocks to make this little baby quilt for a friend's new baby girl. I have definitely ramped down the effort in my blog photos - I'm feeling lucky to just get these online for posterity. This is so soft and cuddly, I can't wait to deliver it (and meet the new sweet girl!).Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8526181.post-30478167717993770702011-02-25T10:32:00.004-06:002011-03-14T08:29:52.807-05:00Elephant EscapeA friend is having a baby soon and commissioned this quilt with this fabric that matches the nursery bedding and curtains. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5476816650/" title="Elephant Escape by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5254/5476816650_7c7b2687ec.jpg" width="340" height="469" alt="Elephant Escape" /></a><br /><br />Some of it is upholstery weight so I was a little nervous about how that would work, but I am so in love with the final quilt. It's hard to see in the photos, but I quilted each block in a square spiral. My uncle said it looked like the elephants were going to jail but we decided it would be nicer if they were escaping from the zoo, so I'm calling this quilt Elephant Escape!<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5476816974/" title="Minky Backing by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5055/5476816974_2381d2b081.jpg" width="340" height="227" alt="Minky Backing" /></a><br /><br />The backing is minky dot and the batting is thin bamboo, giving this quilt a wonderful drape. It will be so snuggly for a new baby! <br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/sarah_mst/5476816756/" title="Polka Dot Binding by SarahMikk, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5057/5476816756_57e207a7d1.jpg" width="340" height="252" alt="Polka Dot Binding" /></a><br /><br />The binding is mostly white with a polka dot section where I did the in-binding label. I hope Graham, due to arrive in just over a week, likes his elephant quilt!Sarahhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05033906103945142183noreply@blogger.com
