Plane Project

For WIP Friday here are some shots of what I've been working on when I've been flying lately. Not sure if this will go with me on vacation at the end of the month or if I'll take something else.

This is Wendy's feather & fan scarf, modified to be narrower. You may remember this scarf from quite a long time ago. I grabbed it for my last couple flights, and really enjoy working on it.

I just love the colors and texture.

One of these months I'll actually finish it!

Skirts

There have been so many cute skirts showing up in blog land (I know I've seen more but can't find the links) that I was finally inspired to make the skirts out of the "skirt fabric" I keep buying.

The floral one is a half-circle skirt, and I think it would have looked better longer. Oh well, craft and learn.

(As I seem to be saying a lot lately, sorry for the crummy pictures. My "new clothes" photographer is out golfing!)

Two down, quite a few to go!

Johnny Chop

After taking on my simple stencil project and it turning out so well, I decided to take on something a little more complicated.

I've been wanting a shirt with the logo of my cousin, Johnny Chop, for a while, and that desire only grew when Johnny passed away in March. I got one of my favorite tshirts and black paint, and used a bumper sticker as a template.

I couldn't be happier with how it came out.

Twin Blankets

My neighbor across the street is having twins in August, so I wanted to make coordinating but not matching gifts for her shower tomorrow. This was so much fun! First I made two blankets with the same fabric but different colors of satin binding.

Then I finally tried the Freezer paper stencils to decorate little wrap tops to go with some pants I bought.

The stencils are from things found on the blanket fabric. Closeups:

Next time I might even try making the pants, too!

Yikes!!

I got my haircut last night... It went from this:

(I'm on the right. That's my sister on the left, who I talk about all the time, and who got me to start this blog!! Hope you don't mind your picture on the internet, Katy!)

To this:

And here it is after styling it myself this morning:

I never have the patience to take as long styling it as my hair lady does, so it never looks the same.

(Sorry about the crummy pictures - weird lighting in that room.)

I think I'm getting used to it, but yikes, it's short!

Goldilocks

Trying to figure out the perfect baby blanket crochet stitch...

Too Loose

Too Slow

(I like the pattern, but it is taking forever! And looking a little strange.)

Just right!

While visiting with my husband's family over Memorial weekend, Peter's cousin mentioned crocheting. I said that was one thing I hadn't been able to figure out on my own, so she pulled out some spare yarn and a crochet hook and showed me how to do it! I have since fallen in love with it. Rather than finish this blanket I have started an entirely new yellow blanket for my friend's shower in a few weeks. I had a little bit of a rough start, as you can tell, but I think the final product will be worth it!

Happy Father's Day

I am lucky to have my dad and my father-in-law both close by, so this evening we are having both sets of parents over for dinner. Peter is grilling, we are having zucchini from our garden, and salad with cucumber from our garden, yay! As exciting as it is to serve veggies from our own garden, I think I might be even more excited about this:

It's a lime chiffon cake (recipe here). It's made totally from scratch, with some neat shortcuts for the filling and frosting. I've made it once before as a practice run, and it's really delicious.

I also did some handmade Father's Day cards:

I had decided to buy cards, but there wasn't anything left when I went grocery shopping today, so I decided to do it myself after all.

Bonus picture - I was too busy eating and serving to take an artistic picture, but here's the inside of the cake:

I'm also making progress on a few other projects, so hopefully no blog dry spells for a little while!

Red Friday

Color Week

Friday = Red

I went almost two weeks one time wearing only shades of red. That's when I realized I would probably stay quite happy with the red wall in my living room and the red valances in my kitchen. Isn't that what they say when you're decorating? If it's a color you love to wear, it's a color you'll enjoy in your home.

That's it for color week! Now back you your regularly scheduled blogging.

Blue Thursday

Color Week

Thursday = Blue

This is the huge flag flying at Fort McHenry in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the flag that inspired the Star Spangled Banner, our national anthem. It is really hard to imagine how large this flag is until you see it in person. I'm glad they were able to have it flying while we were there.

Black Wednesday

Color Week

Wednesday = Black

Black Sand Beach
Kaimu, Big Island, Hawaii

One of my favorite spots on our honeymoon. We walked forever across a volcanic plain, thinking we must have misread the guidebook, seeing no black sand beach. We finally crested a peak, and found out the hike was worth it. This beach used to have huge palm trees, before the volcanic flow overcame them, so a lady started bringing coconuts with her to the beach to plant. After she passed away, others continued the tradition. Bringing life back to beautiful desolation.

Tuesday = Brown

Sweet Dixie, happy to see me.

(Baxter is more tan than brown, but I didn't want him to feel left out.)

My favorite white in my whole house.

(He needs a haircut.)

For Amanda

I got a great comment from Amanda on this post, and I emailed her back to offer her a pair of earrings... She said she liked pink and the chunky style of the crystal earrings, so these are on their way to her:

I also got one final order to go with the earrings and necklace I made earlier - a bracelet!

I haven't made many bracelets, so it took a little while to get it the way I wanted, but I actually quite like it. It is so much fun to make jewelry for other people, and know I'm not the only one who likes it!

We're heading to San Antonio for the weekend, so I'll be radio silent, but I'm taking a project for the car ride, so hopefully I'll have some good pictures when I get back!

Finish What You Have

Vicki over at Turkey Feathers has declared June Finish What You Have month. What a wonderful idea! I failed pretty miserably at Use What You Have month, so maybe I'll do better at this one...

For motivation, here are a few of the things I really want to finish:

I've had this fabric for months, and I've wanted to make a super simple summer skirt... Just some seams, a hem, and elastic.

When she went to Alexandria, VA, in March, my mom got me this great box kit with beautiful paper and bookbinding at Paper Source. I really want to make it up to store little things in my craft nook!

I absolutely love all of Jess Hutch's softie designs, and I have her pattern book, but first I want to try out her kitty from knitty. I even have the yarn!

(I somehow doubt I'll be able to finish that in a month, but it will be fun to get started.)

I have more pictures, but I'm starting to get overwhelmed... Especially when I have two baby presents to whip up for a June 24th shower (materials on hand, just need to sew) and another shower sometime soon after that (I think I'll finish the yellow version of this blanket that's half done already)...

Wish me luck!!

Holy Zucchini, Batman!

When I planted a vegetable garden in my backyard, I told myself I would be happy if I got even one vegetable from it, since I have no idea what I am doing. I was thrilled a few weeks ago to see flowers on all of my plants, which I hoped meant I would get a veggie soon. Sure enough, before we left for Virginia, I saw a zucchini! We decided to let it grow while we were gone and pick it when we got back. Little did we know...

We were able to pick two zucchini:

Doesn't look too strange? Well here is the bigger one next to a coke can...

Yikes! Still not able to visualize just how big this zucchini is? Here is the yarn I got to practice my crochet technique:

Needless to say I won't be letting anymore zucchini get that big! Anyone have a good stuffed zucchini recipe?
