Sorry I've been gone so long. We evacuated to San Antonio - it only took us 12 1/2 hours, which is pretty good considering some of the other stories I've heard. We actually had a fun weekend, and took a very scenic route home on Monday. Our house was completely undamaged, and Peter and I (and the animals!) were so happy to be home. Unfortunately, we picked a bad Dairy Queen to stop at for a Blizzard, and got food poisoning Monday night. We were sick all day Tuesday, then I only had one day back at work to catch up before a two day training class.
In the grand scheme of things this is all so trivial. We are so lucky to have been spared by Rita, and I now know the things that are really important to me. But in my small world, this week has been surreal and crazy, and I can't wait for things to get back to normal! Thanks for all the comments, and hopefully regular crafty-type posting will resume soon!!
We're about as ready as we can be. The storm shutters are up, the animals are ready to go, the car is packed.

It's dark inside even though it's gorgeous and sunny outside. I'm scared to be leaving my house, not knowing what I'll come back to.

Part of me says it won't be as bad as the news is saying. But then I hear them say that a Cat 5 hurricane is headed right here, and that our whole area will be flooded and hit with 130mph winds.
Peter and I will be together, we have somewhere to go, and we're able to take our animals with us. We're lucky. But waiting to see what happens is still going to be so hard.
So this is where current forecasts show Rita going...

I live pretty much in the middle of that path, so at the least we're probably going to have some nasty weather. As are most people probably, I'm more aware of the need to be prepared for a hurricane, after Katrina. So I'm going to focus on having the things together I need in case we evacuate, and the supplies we need in case we stay. I'll be back (I hope) on Monday!
We spent all morning working in very hot weather (isn't it September??) on a Habitat for Humanity house. It was a lot of fun, but I am worn out! We had just a little while between Habitat and another commitment, and instead of doing any of the planned things on my list, I made a necklace to wear to dinner!

It hangs quite nicely:

And since the beads are white, I can wear it with anything!

I took this through the windshield on our way to San Antonio for our first anniversary. I love it when the sun behind a cloud lights up the edge like it's neon.
I haven't been able to do much crafting this week... We've been really busy, and I have been so tired at night I haven't even felt like knitting! I do have quite a list planned, though, so hopefully there will be some posts to come!

I loved the
September theme for Tie One On. This apron took me about ten minutes to make, and I really love it! Even splurging on a
Crate and Barrel dishtowel and new ribbon, this apron cost about $5!

The section across the top has three pockets - this might become my new craft-time apron so I don't constantly have to search for my tape measure and scissors!
Now I just have to remember how to submit it to Amy's gallery...

These are the earrings I wear 95% of the time - pearls my parents gave me for graduation, and diamonds that were my grandmother's.
Still working with the
body parts theme for September. Other great photos
here.
I did finish my apron for
Tie One On and I'll post it tomorrow!

I finally made a necklace with one of the
chalcedony pendants I got a while back.

Combined with the amazonite cubes and tiny butterscotch-colored freshwater pearls, I think it is quite pretty.

It is about 16" long plus the pendant, and I think it will go with a lot in my closet. Here's the full necklace:

Matching earrings to come!

I can't control myself! Here are some MORE beads I got on eBay. My deal with myself is I have to start cranking out actual jewelry from these or I can't keep adding to my stash. So pretty!

Rather than just let these sit around being pretty forever like often happens, I've already made a necklace out of them!

I messed up the ends so I had to use an extender chain to make it long enough, but it still came out pretty. Practice makes perfect!

I don't even know if there
is such a thing as a manly apron. I hope so for a few reasons... First, I like to send a little something handmade with any gifts I give, if I can, and it's hard to come up with things to make for men. Second, when I visited several months ago, my brother-in-law came right home from work and started making pizza dough in his work clothes. Now, he's a pretty careful guy, so he didn't get anything on his nice clothes, but he
could have! So I made him an apron to send with the
bread book I got him for his birthday.

It's very simple, and I don't mind if he never wears it... I just like sending along something I made when I give a store-bought main gift. Here I am modeling in my PJ's (taken at almost 2pm on a Sunday, sheesh I'm lazy!).

Nothing like pink pajamas to make an apron look manly!

Kath at Red Current created a
new website for Self Portrait Tuesday. She also posted a monthly challenge - body parts. For some reason, this picture feels really daring to me. It's nothing different than what people see at the pool, but it still felt risky to post it. I'm going to leave it, though - it's what I thought of when I read the challenge, since it's part of my body I am happy with.

I didn't get up to run yesterday morning (why does 5:45 seem so early??) so I went after work instead while my wonderful husband grilled us some steaks. This is what I was racing against while I ran...

The wind kept picking up, and getting cooler, and the lightning flashed, and there was thunder... and then it ended up not even raining! Gotta love Houston weather...
